Fears over the spread of coronavirus are allegedly prompting taxi and ride-share drivers to discriminate against some customers, according to the New York Post.

The article says anonymous drivers told the paper they were avoiding picking up anyone who they believe to be Chinese. Others told the New York Post they avoided certain areas with a large Asian population.

Mayor Bill de Blasio responded to the article on Twitter, blasting the report as "outrageous" and saying, "Let me perfectly clear: There will be consequences for anyone caught taking part in this kind of cruel racial profiling."

Commissioner of the city's Taxi and Limousine Commission Heredia Jarmoszuk also responded.

"Not in our city," she says. "Fare refusal is illegal--we won't stand for discrimination against our Asian American community. Fear is the enemy, not our neighbors. Report service refusals immediately to 311/311 online and we will take action."
