Chiara de Blasio, daughter of Mayor Bill de Blasio, sat down with News 12 The Bronx to discuss how this summer brought domestic violence awareness closer to her heart.

The first daughter of New York interned with the mayor's office to combat domestic violence, an issue she's particularly drawn to. In her first on-camera interview without her parents, the 19-year-old told News 12 that the internship changed her.

She says she hit the streets, informing people about domestic violence and where to get help. De Blasio says the experience, including working with victims, inspired her to switch majors.

She is now back at college in California, starting her junior year with new experiences, a new major and new goals. She hopes to have a career in domestic violence prevention.

The Family Justice Center in the Bronx, where de Blasio interned, sees 1,600 domestic violence victims every month. The deputy director says it's nice to see the torch passed on to younger generations.
