Members of the Melrose community want concerns about a homeless shelter addressed.

The residents say that the Pyramid Safe Haven men's shelter on East 161st Street was opened in January, but they were never made aware of it.

The Department of Homeless Services says that the building only serves as temporary housing, which has been vital for men seeking shelter during the winter. The agency says it began notifying elected officials and local community board members about the facility on Jan. 15.

The DHS also says the facility was part of a seven-day notification process for emergency sitting, since the frigid temperatures this past winter made it unsafe for anyone to be outside for an extended period.

Community Board 3 discussed their issues with the shelter during a meeting Monday. They say the homeless men are now trying to get into buildings, use bathrooms at colleges, which has them concerned for their safety.

The community board is now looking to arrange a meeting with BronxWorks, which heads the shelter program, to discuss it further.
