Crews in South Bound Brook have removed more than 100 cats from a house since Wednesday.
Pollice were working with a regional animal rescue group. Staffers with St. Huberts Animal Welfare Center helped officers at a home on Canal Road. The homeowner lives there with her father.
On Thursday, first responders were checking traps and collecting more cats -- some of which lived in the walls of the structure. The animals were taken away in cat carriers to the rescue group.
Police and firefighters were seen wearing oxygen tanks due to the condition of the home, specifically involving the odor.
A friend of the homeowner, Ann Marie Carr, spoke on the homeowner's behalf.
"I want to continue helping her all the way, she needs it because I know she loves her cats," Carr said.
The homeowner did not want to speak with News 12 and was noticeably angry her cats were taken from her.
Carr suggested this help was desperately needed.
In a statement, St. Huberts Animal Welfare Center said, "It is gut-wrenching to see so many cats and kittens living in filthy, poor conditions. We are grateful to the South Bound Brook Police Department for answering the call to help these animals."
Some of the animals are suffering from malnutrition and respiratory illness.
Eventually, they will be put up for adoption.
The homeowner could face animal cruelty charges. Police are still investigating to determine if that will happen.
