Morris H.S. evacuated after crew hits gas line in the Bronx
A construction crew hit a gas line at Morris High School Tuesday, prompting officials to order an evacuation.
Fire officials say a contractor for the Department of Environmental Protection was digging to repair a water main nearby and struck the line with a back hoe around 11 a.m.
Officials say at least 1,500 students and staff and 40 people from neighboring homes were evacuated from the area temporarily.
Con Edison shut down the gas main on Jackson Avenue as emergency crews worked to check for any leaks inside surrounding buildings.
Con Edison crews repaired the line after several hours.
