Street signs went up at a Morrisania intersection Saturday in honor of a deceased judge whom relatives and former colleagues remember as a visionary.

The ceremony was held at Boston Road and East 165th Street. Attendees said Judge Hansel L. McGee Place is a fitting tribute to McGee, who believed that people deserve second chances. And McGee "did it from the trenches," said his son, Leland McGee, as well as from behind the bench.

The judge worked for 11 years at the Bronx County Hall of Justice. He also served as the board chairman of the Southeast Bronx Neighborhood Centers, where he played an active role in trying to revitalize Morrisania.

McGee also started a charter school. "He put some pressure on me to guarantee to get the money for the charter schools from Albany, which we did," said former Assemblywoman Gloria Davis.

The judge is also remembered for his humor, said his wife, Mildred McGee. She continues to run a foundation that they started together.

She said the goal is to better educate all children, especially minorities.
