One Melrose mother says trips have become challenging due to elevator issues at the Adams Houses.
Making the trip up and down the stairs to her 19th-floor apartment has become somewhat of a routine for Ana Mercedes. Over the past four months, the mother of three says the elevators in her NYCHA building have been in and out of service.
Only one of the two elevators was working for the entire 21-floor building Monday. "My frustration is seeing my daughter missing her physical therapy," said Mercedes.
Mercedes says her two-year-old daughter, who has a physical disability, sometimes misses those appointments because the therapist can't get up to their apartment without the elevator. "I explained all this to the management office, and it's like nothing has been done," said Mercedes.
Mercedes says she and her family have even gotten stuck in the elevator before. She says she doesn't want her kids, or anyone else in the building, feeling trapped anymore.
NYCHA responded to this story saying in part, "Adams Houses has two elevators and at least one of them has been operational within the last 30 days. Outages have been due to mechanical issues. NYCHA has a nearly $32 billion need for capital funding to address its aging housing portfolio, including elevators."
