Mott Haven teacher raises money for new fields
A Mott Haven Community High School teacher raised money Saturday to fix the school's baseball and softball fields.
Michelle Gibbs, a teacher and co-softball coach, says she started a campaign on Fixafield.com, an online fundraising company, to repair St. Mary's Park. She says the softball team had to relocate to Randall's Island to play because of the uneven fields.
"There are times a rainstorm will come through and you'll have a creek through the middle of your field," she says. "That will be a creek through the middle of your field for the entire season."
The city's Parks Department told News 12 that although parks are not involved in the online fundraising campaign, they recognize the desire and need for further improvements to the ballfield at St. Mary's and are seeking the necessary funding to do so.
So far Gibbs has raised $1,200 of the $2,000 needed to fix the park. The softball team hopes to play at home next spring.
