Mott Haven tenants rally against landlord over living conditions
Tenants living in one Mott Haven apartment building rallied against their landlord Monday, saying they're tired of their unhealthy living situation.
The tenants at 386 East 139th St. have formed an alliance called The South Bronx Tenants Movement. They say there are 92 open violations against their landlord, with 56 submitted since February.
Blonnie Rodgers, 61, says her apartment is infested with rodents and bugs, her bathroom is falling apart and her windows have no insulation.
"I cry a lot because I feel like my landlord isn't helping me get through this," she says.
The alliance's leader, Juan Cano, believes it's a result of gentrification.
"Some of the tenants here are hardworking people and they're being forced out," he says. "Some of them with tactics of harassment and tactics of being bullied with immigration."
The tenants say they are vowing to take legal action soon.
News 12 has reached out to the apartment building's landlord but has not yet heard back.
