The group of young artists behind a new mural along Longwood Avenue are trying to tackle this summer's increased violence with a community-inspired painting.

It's on the side of the Police Athletic League's new South Bronx Center.

Children from a wide range of ages took part in the six-week project.

"They researched the mural," says Frederick Watts, the PAL's executive director. "They worked with teaching artists. They interviewed members of the community to find out what they want."

In the corner, a brewing storm approaches. Beneath the clouds, two young children in the center face a choice between positivity or violence.

"It's nothing but positivity," says artist Amir McCuller. "You don't have to be out on the street. You don't have to do drugs."

The children choose other things, McCuller says.

"You can do sports," he says. "You can read books. It's a beautiful thing."
