The Stamford chapter of the NAACP rallied Monday night at the Stamford Government Center in search of answers following Steven Barrier's death a few months ago.
Barrier lost consciousness in a Stamford police car following his arrest on domestic disturbance charges in October. Barrier died shortly after.
Now, his family is demanding answers and want more information about his time in police custody and say Monday's rally is another step in their quest for justice.
Protesters carried red and yellow signs in the lobby with messages for officials. They want an independent investigation into Barrier's death.
Barrier's relatives say their requests to meet with the Stamford Board of Representatives have been rejected, so the group filed into the steering committee meeting to show their determination.
An investigation by the state's attorney is still ongoing, but they say they are no signs that police officers injured Barrier.
Barrier's cause of death has not yet been determined.
Barrier's family hired Ben Crump, a nationally known civil rights attorney, to pursue the case.
Crump told News 12 last week he will pursue legal action but declined to be specific.
