Nassau County Executive Laura Curran is asking Gov. Andrew Cuomo to let bars and restaurants stay open later than the current mandated curfew.
Restaurant owners across Main Street in Farmingdale say their businesses are taking a massive hit due to the mandated 10 p.m. curfew. Curran has now joined their calls to lift it.
Davide Fabrizi of Main Street Pizza Company in Farmingdale says his profits are down 20% since the curfew went into effect in November. The curfew was put in place to combat rising COVID-19 figures, but Fabrizi says it's time to loosen things up.
"Whether it's takeout, a diner, a bar, a 10 o'clock curfew is too tight," says Fabrizi. "I think 12 o'clock is more reasonable."
Curran sent a letter to Cuomo asking to adjust the curfew to midnight, saying that bars and restaurants can open and operate safely. She adds that the restrictions hurt the revenue for restaurant owners and also cut the hours and tips of employees.
In response, the governor's spokesman issued a statement saying: "We understand the stress restaurants are facing during this crisis ... the fact remains, however, that we are still fighting a global pandemic, and this common-sense rule reduces risk."
Fabrizi says besides putting eateries out of business, the curfew will also increase the risk of the local spread of the virus at private parties.
"People are still going to do what they want to do, but now they are going to do it in a shorter time window," he says.
