Nassau County is investing $6 million into a new rental assistance program.
It would cover up to three months of unpaid rent at $2,500 a month and is paid directly to the landlord.
"It is our hope that this rent relief significantly minimizes the financial burden and the stress that so many of our families and our landlords are facing right now," says Nassau Executive Laura Curran.
"We want to give everyone an equal opportunity to learn about the program, to feel comfortable about the program, to submit some preliminary information, and we'll put all those intake forms into a random lottery," says Gwen O'Shea, president of Community Development Corporation.
The application process begins on Jan. 6, but it's limited to only 900 renters.
The county says it will utilize funding provided from its allocation of the federal Community Development Block Grant relief funds through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
