A pool at a public park that was once closed because of illegal dumping has not been used for years, and residents want to know when it will reopen.
Neighbors say the pubic pool at Roberto Clemente Park in Brentwood has been closed since 2014 for repairs. In 2016, a sign was placed saying that the pool would reopen in 2018. But it's already halfway through the summer, and residents say there's no signs it will reopen anytime soon.
"Why do our kids have to wait? Why is it that they don't come into our neighborhood and talk to our kids?" wonders Central Islip resident Nelsena Day.
Town officials say it's because the nearly $3 million renovation project is more involved than was originally thought. With repainted bathrooms, new tile work and concrete set to be poured, town spokeswoman Caroline Smith says there's "tremendous progress with the pool's rehabilitation."
Neighbors say some repairs have been made, and town officials told Newsday that they faced setbacks from weather conditions.
There's no official date as to when the pool could reopen. Town officials say it could happen this summer.
