The city is starting a new initiative to keep leftovers from going to the trash and instead to people who need them.
The Department of Sanitation has set up the Donate NYC Food Portal, where donors can post available food. A recipient will be notified based on an algorithm that matches their location, needs and capacity.
Officials say places that sell food, including restaurants and grocery stores, can utilize the portal and sign up online.
The portal also automatically generates a tax receipt for the donor.
