New laws set to go into effect in 2020
The start of the new year is quickly approaching, and a list of new laws will soon kick into effect statewide.
When the new year rings in, new laws will follow.
New Yorkers will see significant changes to legislation in 2020.

Starting March 1, there will be a ban on all plastic carryout bags. Consumers will be charged 5 cents for each paper carryout bag they use at checkout. To avoid this fee, you can bring your own reusable bag to stores.
As millions of New Yorkers return to work, some will have some extra change in their pocket as minimum wage is going up again. Employers in New York City with 11 employees or more are already up to $15 an hour, but now companies with 10 workers or less will be required to pay that rate.
Long Island and Westchester minimum wage rates will go up to $13 an hour, while the remainder of the state will reach $11.80.
Cash bail will also be eliminated for misdemeanors and nonviolent felonies. Some exceptions include sex offenses and domestic abuse cases. Supporters say bail criminalizes poverty, but still, law enforcement officials say they are concerned.
Farm workers will soon get more rights thanks to the Farm Laborers Fair Labor Practices Act. The new law sets overtime at 60 hours a week.
