A new state anti-violence program called SNUG is being brought to the Soundview section of the Bronx.

The program, made possible through funding from state Sen. Jeffrey Klein, sends SNUG members into a neighborhood after violence occurs to try and prevent violent retaliations. 

To accomplish this, members say they use mediation training and simply listen to what people have to say.

SNUG officials are now looking to hire about four to five employees to go out into the Soundview community to do this work by the beginning of summer.

Members say they determine if they are needed in an area based on the number of shootings in the last seven years, how many men are out of the workforce between the ages of 13 and 40 years old, the poverty level, and the number of children born out of wedlock.

They say these areas are prime targets for gang recruitment and violence.
