The group “No New Jails” held a block party and information session Saturday to encourage protest against the city’s jail expansion plan.
Mayor Bill de Blasio’s jail expansion plan includes closing Rikers in 2027 and adding four borough-based jails in the Bronx, Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn.
No New Jails says the plan is flawed. They say they believe Rikers should be closed immediately and no new jails should be built.
They say the estimated $11 billion cost of the mayor’s jail extension plan should be put back into the community.
“I rather see it spent in our future, like in schools, in children,” says Myra Hernandez.
The group says the block party served to reach out to people because they believe many are being misinformed about the plan.
No New Jails says they will hold more meetings in the future and are urging people to contact their elected officials to demand a better solution.
