The Department of Finance and Aging hit the streets of the Bronx Friday to spread the word about the city's rent freeze program for eligible seniors.
Volunteers from the department say if you are 63 years old, make less than $50,000 a year and are living in a rent-regulated apartment you may qualify.
It's estimated that about 80,000 New York seniors qualify to get their rent put on hold, but they just don't know it.
Officials with the department say the program is designed to ease the burden of seniors who often have to choose between paying their rent or buying medication.
Lillian Gonzales learned about the program through her church.
"Any help you can get is welcomed," she says.
Officials say the rent freeze also helps landlords who could qualify with tax credits.
Volunteers say they will be outside of senior and community centers, and parks for the next several weeks to get the word out about the program.
