NYC ITS reminds New Yorkers to be alert while shopping on Cyber Monday
The New York City Office of Information Technology Services is reminding New Yorkers this Cyber Monday to remain cautious of scams while shopping online.
To maximize the chances of securing great online deals, while minimizing online shopping risks, the ITS says consumers should engage in safe online behavior.
They recommend shopping only with merchants and websites you know and trust and to make sure the site is secure.
They say look for "HTTPS" when making an online purchase. The "s" stands for "secure" and indicates that communication with the webpage is encrypted.
Think twice before clicking on email links or pop-up advertisements, they warn.
When you receive unsolicited email offers or pop-up ads that appear to be from legitimate stores, be very cautious.
Do not use public computers or public Wi-Fi for personal banking or online shopping. Public computers may be compromised with malicious software. Additionally, criminals can intercept traffic on public wireless networks to steal credit card numbers and other confidential information.
Take precautions with the passwords you use for online accounts. Use different passwords for different online accounts, especially for those accounts tied to your financial information.
Lastly, the ITS says consider changing your passwords after the holiday shopping season ends in order to further protect yourself.
