New York City legislators are mourning the death of John McCain.

The Arizona senator and former presidential candidate died Saturday after battling brain cancer.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo released a statement that says, "John McCain criticized all of us because in his mind, those of us who are privileged to hold public office can never work hard enough for the people of this country. He was right."

Rep. Eliot Engel of the 16th District in the Bronx says that history will remember McCain as one of the "great Americans of the 20th and 21st centuries."

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio tweeted that McCain served the country "with honor" in the Navy, as a representative and as a senator. He also offered thoughts and prayers to his family and loved ones.

McCain's casket will lie in state in the Capitol rotunda and a funeral service will be held at Washington National Cathedral.

Former presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush are both expected to give eulogies.

The New York Times reported that Vice President Mike Pence is invited to the funeral, but President Donald Trump is not.
