A wellness check from the NYPD led to the discovery of a decomposed body inside of an East Tremont apartment building.

The body was discovered this past weekend on the fifth floor of 800 East 179th St. near Mapes Avenue.

Police say the call for the wellness check came in at 2 p.m. on Saturday, when they responded and found the decomposing body. It’s not currently known how long the body was there.

“It’s really surprising for me, because I never hear nothing in this building or this area,” said resident Emmanuel. “I have five years living here, and it’s weird because this building is quiet, there is elderly people living here.”

The medical examiner is working to determine the cause of death. The body has not yet been identified.
