The NYPD Explorers Program hosted an open house Wednesday at the Mall at Bay Plaza for kids who are interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement.
The program is geared toward boys and girls ages 14 to 20. Police say explorers are taught through training the importance of self-discipline and respect for diversity and human dignity.
Explorers plan out and execute their own activities, learning leadership and teamwork in the program that includes an annual competition. The weeklong national event invites members to learn law enforcement, fire and EMS skills from some of the top-ranking officials throughout the country.
Explorers are also involved in activities like graffiti cleanup and representing the NYPD at parades.
Kids were able to sign up for the program at the open house.
Lesandro "Junior" Guzman-Feliz, the 15-year-old who was brutally killed outside a Belmont deli in June, was a member of the Explorers Program. Police say they received an influx of inquiries about the program after his death.
The NYPD has created a $10,000 scholarship fund through the Police Foundation in Junior's name. Two explorers are each awarded $5,000 for college tuition and other school expenses.
