The Bronx NYPD officer shot while responding to a brawl was hit by friendly fire, police revealed Monday evening.
Officer Sherrod Stuart was shot in the ankle by another officer.
As News 12 previously reported, Stuart and his partner chased a suspect away from the brawl at 2505 3rd Ave.
Police have identified the suspect as 19-year-old Christopher Rice. During the chase, he allegedly fired at them.
A bullet struck Stuart in the foot, and he shot Rice four times.
Both Stuart and Rice were taken to local hospitals and are expected to be OK.
Stuart gave the camera a thumbs-up in a photo from his hospital bed, flanked by NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton.
Stuart has been a member of the NYPD for four years, according to officials.
Rice was charged earlier Monday with assault on a police officer, menacing, and criminal possession of a weapon.
