Officers of the NYPD's 49th Precinct have arrested a 39-year-old man for allegedly assaulting a 10-year-old girl and stealing her cellphone.
Police say a tip led them to Marcos Lazaro, a 39-year-old from Holland Avenue who they say can be seen on surveillance video kicking the girl in the face.
The tip came from a local business owner, who texted the community's neighborhood coordination officer on her day off. Police are crediting the community policing initiative for the quick arrest.
The video shows a man walk into a building lobby, grab a girl's phone, throw her to the ground and punt her.
Police are charging Lazaro with robbery and assault causing injury to a person less than 11 years old.
"This man is a terrible man to do what he did to her," says Detective Alisa Colon, who took part in the arrest.
Lazaro was arrested in 2010 for grand larceny and in 2002 for burglary.
A family friend tells News 12 that the girl is OK.
"He's lucky he was arrested and that the people on the block didn't catch him," says Anthony Morales, the friend. "Because there probably would've been a different outcome."
