NYPD: Man arrested for threatening borough president
A man accused of threatening Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. at the Dominican Day Parade was arrested Sunday, according to police.
Police say they arrested a 22-year-old man who they say was armed with a loaded .38 caliber pistol at the parade on Sunday.
They identified the suspect as Cano Cristophe and say he was also carrying a green, leafy substance believed to be marijuana.
Sources claim Cristophe told police that he was a hitman hired with the borough president as his target.
Police say the suspect is mentally ill and that they did not have evidence anyone actually hired him to carry out such an act.
At the time of the arrest, Diaz was attending a concert at Orchard Beach. He has since left for the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia.
In a statement, the borough president's office thanked the NYPD and the Bronx DA's office for investigating the threat.
Christophe is being held in jail, but as an additional precaution, the NYPD has stationed officers to guard Diaz's home, his father's home and his office.
