An NYPD officer accidentally shot himself in the leg in Longwood Friday, the department says.

He was taken to a hospital from the intersection of Westchester Avenue and Simpson Street around 3:30 p.m. He is listed in stable condition.

Witnesses say the officer pulled over a red car with two people inside. He approached the vehicle and reached for his gun. Then it went off.

The two people in the car were taken into custody.
