The NYPD is making a $4 million contribution to the community. Police gathered at the Sheepshead Bay Houses on Tuesday for the opening of a new basketball court.
The new is court one of 15 opened throughout the city. The money for the new additions came from asset forfeiture funds seized from law enforcement operations. With the rise in crime on the streets, police say these new courts will help bring the community together.
"Right now, a basketball court, this is a beginning to get us to have a safe place for our children to play with," says David Barrere, NYPD chief of housing.
"It's a great step to show the community that we are listening to the concerns, but also doing what we can to keep them safe during the summer months," says Gregory Thomas, senior executive for Law Enforcement Operations.
A toy giveaway was hosted after the ribbon cutting for the court for kids living the houses.
