The NYPD and Volunteers of America-Greater New York kicked off their school supply donation drive at the East 161st Street subway station Wednesday.
This is the second year the officers have teamed up with Volunteers of America as part of Operation Backpack.
The supplies collected go to students in domestic violence programs and shelters so they can begin the school year prepared.
"We want to give these kids something to look forward to," says Sgt. Fernando Lopez.
Pens, markers and notebooks are just a few of the items donated so far. The Bronx drop-off site is one of several subway locations throughout the city.
Donations can be dropped off again at the E. 161st Street location on Thursday between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m.
