A documentary presented at the Changing Minds Young Filmmakers Festival tells the story of a Bronx native dealing with depression after childhood trauma.
New York University film student Kendra Brown, 20, shares the story of Veronica Carter – who has dealt with depression years after being sexually assaulted and burned.
When Brown was challenged with sharing someone’s story through film, she sat down with Carter and opened the conversation on mental health.
The two worked to change viewers’ minds on how people viewed mental well-being, particularly in the black community.
“Especially in the black community, we sort of have a culture of silence surrounding mental health,” says Brown.
When the Changing Minds Young Filmmaker Festival came around, it made sense to share the documentary.

"I hope it sparks those deep conversations with theirselves - that awareness, like I can do this,” says Carter.
Carter is still on her journey finding joy in her children and grandchildren – continuing therapy with good days and bad ones.
