Union officials say an inmate at Rikers Island sexually assaulted a correction officer Saturday night.
The Correction Officers' Benevolent Association says that a completely naked inmate at Rikers ran into the housing area where a female officer was stationed and then tried to pull her pants off.
Two other correction officers were able to jump in, taking the inmate, Antonio Rich, who also has a warrant out for rape following a May arrest, off the officer.
The union says this incident is the second sexual assault against one of its female members in the past two months. It says it happened at the Otis Bantum Correctional Center.
Meanwhile, all three officers were treated and released from the hospital.
The incident has added to the union’s ongoing push to decrease the ratio of officers to inmates to 1 to 15, different than 1 to 50 that it is now.
The union is also asking the Department of Corrections to alert officers on the backgrounds of the inmates they are supervising.
