Four garbage trucks were damaged in a fire at the Town of Oyster Bay's Syosset yard Tuesday afternoon, officials say.

The Nassau County chief fire marshal says the fire started in the engine of one garbage truck and then spread to the others.

The trucks were powered by compressed natural gas.

The Syosset fire chief, who worked to put out the fire, made a request for Nassau County Hazmat partly because of the natural gas cylinders.

Syosset firefighters say they were able to contain the fire and the natural gas leak with no injuries. They say they had to roll out about 1,000 feet of hose to battle the fire.

"The staff here did their job, shut off the natural gas right away, the valves all worked on the trucks exactly as their supposed to, so there was really no hazard from it," said First Assistant Chief Edward Judge, with the Syosset Fire Department.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino says the trucks were older vehicles that were not in service at the time of the fire.

He says there will be no disruption to garbage pickup because of the fire.

"There will be no increase in property taxes in the town's portion of property taxes as a result of this," Saladino says.

Officials say no one was hurt in the fire and it is not considered suspicious.
