The Bronx borough president's office is issuing a survey to better understand the needs of the LGBTQ community and provide appropriate resources.
"We're urging folks to help us," says Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. "This survey will allow us to move forward with the necessary information so we can do better."
The survey, found on the borough president's website, is asking the LGBTQ community questions that can give a clearer picture of how the Bronx can better serve a community that may feel underserved.
Sean Coleman, of Destination Tomorrow, says the survey is a good starting point. His grassroots agency has been serving the city for years, claiming to be the unofficial LGBTQ center for the borough. There are currently no city-funded centers that focus on the LGBTQ community.
"I think the resources that are needed are well-documented," Coleman says. "Jobs, housing, a center that’s not a medically focused center."
Coleman adds that LGBTQ residents in the Bronx need a center that looks at the culture of their community.
"It brings in art and entertainment, it brings in education," he says. "It's a meeting place that brings in LGBT. That's what's missing."
