City officials on Thursday called on the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to increase disability access and subway and bus stations.
Many straphangers said that few station elevators and escalators work properly, making mass transit an unreliable option for disabled commuters.
A new study by the city comptroller's office shows that 80 percent of elevators and escalators did not receive recent maintenance and failed inspections.
"I may have gotten through the 'summer of hell,' but if you're in a wheelchair and you need to take an elevator or escalator to get around, the anguish started long before the summer," said Comptroller Scott Stringer.
The MTA tells News 12 that 100 key stations will be fully compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act by 2020.
