A celebration was held in Morris Heights Monday as the neighborhood was presented with plans for a new community center on 183rd Street.
Council Member Pierina Sanchez signed a $7 million check with support from Speaker Adrienne Adams. The money is said to fund a nine-story community center in place of the current Morris Heights Health Center. The facility will house health and wellness resources as well as a fitness center and recreation activates for school children.
Sanchez says this is an effort to provide stability and reduce violence in the community.
Officials are looking for the public's input on what they would like to see in the center. A town hall is planned for May and June in which Bronx residents can share their visions.
