The old Kosciuszko Bridge – a 78-year-old span that connects Brooklyn and Queens – will be imploded Sunday.
The implosion had been delayed due to protests from some officials that expressed concerns about the environmental effects and impacts on people's health.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo officially opened the new span of the Kosciuszko Bridge in April. State officials say imploding the bridge is actually safer than dismantling it.
The second span is expected to be complete by 2020.
Signs have been posted near the old bridge to warn of a blast sound.
