The Bronx chapter of Jack and Jill of America hosted its annual "Our Voices, Our Story, Our History" event at the Bronx Museum of the Arts on Sunday during Black History Month.
One of the learning activities at the event included making paper designs to represent quilts that African-American slaves made during the 18th and 19th centuries to communicate with each other.
There was also a performance from artist Ethel Calhoun, who recited poems from Sojourner Truth and Langston Hughes.
Calhoun said her generation has a duty to teach kids about the past.
"They should know it and embrace it so they can be better people, individuals, and make similar or even greater accomplishments for the future."
