Parishioners seek compromise after church closes
A group of Mott Haven parishioners say they plan on continuing the fight to keep their church open even after it held its final service over the weekend.
St. Peter's Lutheran Church closed its doors after Sunday's service.
The Metropolitan New York Synod Council, which governs Lutheran churches in the city, notified the congregation in June that the church would close due to its financial troubles.
The parishioners hired lawyer Bruce Bozeman to attempt to negotiate a compromise with the council.
In the meantime, neighbors say that they fear a vacant church will become a target for vandalism.
