Some residents say the Bruckner Boulevard footbridge has so much trash that it is a hazard to the community.
A number of pedestrians have started petitioning for the footbridge to be cleaned on a regular basis. They are calling for more garbage cans in the area, signs that warn against littering and more safety measures. Although a sign on the bridge states that surveillance cameras are in use, residents say a walk across the bridge is not a good idea at night.
There's also a green slime that oozes from the trash every time it rains, according to pedestrians. The bridge may have been cleaned a couple days ago, but some say that's an infrequent occurrence.
One community member says she reached out to elected officials and the city to no avail.
News 12 reached out to the Department of Sanitation, which says the footbridge is the Department of Transportation's responsibility.
"We are aware of the concerns mentioned and are looking into the situation," says a DOT spokesperson.
