Photographer's series captures images of Puerto Rican youth
A Bronx photographer is aiming to capture the spirit of the Puerto Rican culture through the perspective of the youth.
Through his photo series entitled "Pallante", a slang word that was coined in the 60s and 70s during the fight for Puerto Rican self-determination, Edwin Torres hopes to capture the youth's feelings on their heritage.
"The revolutionary newspaper was called 'Pallante,'" Torres said. "And the idea was, you know, no matter what the adversity was, what the obstacles, odds were... you know, you move forward, always forward."
In the photo series, Torres has captured the stories of a high school senior hoping to go to college despite struggles with his GPA and low household income and a domestic violence victim who helps others like her at a local clinic.
The Bronx is home to one of the largest Puerto Rican communities in the United States. Puerto Rico's economy is continuing to collapse, which may lead to more of the Puerto Rican youth coming to the United States.
Torres hopes that his photos can just provide a glimmer of hope for the future.
