Police: 40 gang members arrested in the Bronx
Police and prosecutors announced Thursday that dozens of people are facing charges in another gang takedown in the Bronx.
Officials say 40 alleged members of a local gang were indicted on charges connected to 40 acts of violence in the Fordham section of the borough.
According to police, the gang members were part of the "Nine-Four Crew." They say the gang's leader organized many violent attacks on rival gangs from his jail cell on Rikers Island.
Those alleged acts of violence include four murders, five stabbings, several shooting and robberies, as well as a carjacking of a U-Haul truck.
Prosecutors say one of the alleged members, who is just 13 years old, would hold guns and sell drugs for other Nine-Four members.
Officials say the gang operated on East 194th Street between Valentine and Webster avenues in Fordham.
Police began investigating the gang last year, ultimately leading to the 95-count indictment against 40 alleged members with charges that include second-degree murder, second-degree attempted murder and first-degree manslaughter.
Out of the 40 suspected members, 18 were arrested Wednesday and 19 remain in custody, including the alleged gang leader. Police say three members remain at large.
The takedown is just one of five that have happened across the city in the past week.
Prosecutors say that in the course of the investigation, five guns were recovered and more than 2 million Facebook pages were reviewed, as investigators say members would often describe and even brag about their crimes on social media.
