Police have declared the Western Connecticut State University campus safe after a "shelter in place" order.
At around 2 p.m. a female student inside the Visual & Performing Arts Center said she saw a man with a duffel bag and something inside it that looked like a gun.
Chris Ehlers, a student who was in the building at the time, says the girl sitting next to him told him what she saw. The girl shouted to everyone in the class, and police were called to the scene. The students then hid under their desks.
"My heart was racing, and I just didn't know what was going to happen," says Ehlers.
Police went room to room to secure the Visual & Performing Arts Center. All classes and activities on both campuses were canceled.
Police say they have no confirmation that anyone had a gun.
