A Brooklyn man is grieving after police shot his dog.

News 12 is told it happened after a person was being chased by police and ran into the yard where the dog lived.

The dog owner tells News 12 he is very upset and wants answers.

It happened around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday when police say they tried to pull over a vehicle with fake temporary plates in Flatbush when the person driving jumped out of the vehicle and fled.

A neighbor tells News 12 they saw two suspects run into the yard where the pit bull was. The neighbor says this sent the dog into a frenzy.

When officers arrived, they say the dog was attacking people. They claim they tried to get the dog to calm down, but it could not. In video of the incident, three gunshots can be heard.

The frustrated owner says he is not sure why killing the dog was necessary.

He says at this hour police are still not letting anyone in the house. The owner of the dog says a second dog is in the house and says it is unclear why police will not let anyone in.

Police say they are still searching for the suspects who were in the vehicle with the illegal plates.
