Police say a man was fatally shot inside the lobby of an apartment building in Wakefield Monday night.

They say officers arrived at the apartment on White Plains Road just before 9 p.m. where they found 43-year-old Shameek Lilly with a gunshot wound in his chest.

Lilly was rushed to Montefiore Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Lilly's father, Charlie Brown, says he and his wife were in shock when they received the news of their son's death.
"I was inside my house when someone knocks on the door and tells me my son is downstairs laid out, and we ran downstairs,” says Brown.

Michael Ramirez, a longtime friend of Lilly, says he was a loved resident of the apartment building.

"We used to talk every morning, early in the morning, get up together and start our day," says Ramirez. "I'm just thinking I won't get that call in the morning."

Detectives have yet to release a description of the suspect.
