Police: Man who attempted to rape 83-year-old woman arrested
Police say the 51-year-old accused of attempting to rape an 83-year-old woman in Castle Hill was arrested and facing multiple charges.
Gary Mallette was escorted out of the Bronx Special Victims Unit early Thursday afternoon. Police say he was caught when a lieutenant recognized him on the subway platform of the ACE line at 42nd Street.
Police say Mallette knocked on an 83-year-old woman's door on the Castle Hill Houses on Saturday around 1 a.m. When she answered, they say he struck her multiple times in an attempt to rape her. She suffered broken ribs and facial injuries.
Some Castle Hill Houses tenants told News 12 that they have known the suspect for years and don’t believe the rape allegation. They did, however, believe that Mallette tried to steal her belongings for drug money.
Authorities say Mallette has at least 50 prior arrests. He’s facing charges that include robbery, sexually motivated assault, burglary, predatory sexual assault and unlawful imprisonment.
