Police: Mother charged in 4-year-old girl's abduction
The biological mother of an abducted 4-year-old Bronx girl is facing charges, police say.
A citywide Amber Alert had been issued for Mia Olarte after authorities say her mother, 49-year-old Dora Estrella Olarte, took her during a supervised visit at a Mott Haven foster care center Monday evening. The child was found safe Tuesday in Queens.
According to authorities, Olarte does not have custody of her daughter, who has Down syndrome and lives with a foster family in the Mount Hope section of the Bronx. However, she does have weekly visitation at the New York Foundling on Brown Place.
Olarte was brought to the NYPD's 40th Precinct for questioning Tuesday afternoon. She is facing a number of charges that include endangering the welfare of a child and custodial interference.
While being escorted out of the precinct, Olarte said the agency abuses kids, which is why she took her daughter. News 12 is told that police tracked down the elder Olarte through her cellphone.
Police added she has a history of mental health issues and allegations of abuse.
Johanny Ramirez, the young girl's foster mother, says she picked her up from the hospital and that she is in good health. Family and friends gave Mia Olarte a warm welcome upon her return home. She has been with Ramirez since she was 5 months old.
