A person was found dead in the water at Orchard Beach on Wednesday afternoon, according to the NYPD.

Police say that the person was observed floating in the water when lifeguards responded to the body.

The victim was taken to the hospital and was pronounced dead.

According to the New York City Parks department, staff was notified just before 10 a.m. of a possible missing swimmer who had not come back to shore.

Lifeguards performed their first water search at 10 a.m. and did not find the missing swimmer. A larger search involving the NYPD and FDNY began at 12:15 p.m. before lifeguards pulled a man who appeared to be in his 20s from the water, according to NYC Parks.

NYC Parks provided the following statement:

"We’re saddened by this tragic loss of life and our hearts go out to the victim's family and friends."

The cause of death has yet to be determined.
