More than a dozen police officers rushed to the intersection of Broadway and Manhattan College Parkway in Riverdale Tuesday evening after reports of a carjacking that turned out to be false.
Initial reports suggested there was a child inside the car, and officers and detectives from as far as Westchester County came to assist.
But police say it was all a lie.
Sources say the purported victim changed his statement several times before admitting that he'd made it up.
News 12 cameras saw him walk out of an ambulance with bandages on his head.
Police initially were led to believe that someone struck him over the head before taking his car — a red, two-door 2018 Honda Civic.
Police say the man was emotionally disturbed and are not filing charges.
