Two suspects remain at large following a weekend shooting that involved an off-duty Long Island police officer.
Police say the Hempstead Village officer's white SUV was rear-ended near the corner of Hall of Fame Terrace and Sedgwick Avenue around 6 a.m. Saturday by a black Toyota Camry carrying two men. They say the situation escalated into a verbal dispute, and two other men in a red Nissan pulled up. They allegedly joined in on the assault and attempted robbery of the officer.
In a struggle, police say the officer shot himself in the leg and also shot the two men in the Camry. The officer was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital in stable condition, while the others were taken to Bronx-Lebanon Hospital by the suspects in the Nissan, who drove away.
The two wounded suspects remain hospitalized and in police custody.
There was no word on the availability of surveillance video of the incident.
