A summer program in the Bronx is aiming to make sure kids remember during the summer what they learned in school.
Jaylex Calderon's mother enrolled her in the Practice Makes Perfect program because she was worried about her daughter falling behind in school - otherwise known as the "summer slide."
Jaylex has been paired up with a high school-aged mentor. Together they go over math, reading and writing.
"I can ask the mentor to come and help me and explain it thoroughly and slowly," Jaylex says.
For five weeks, students will meet at the Young Women's Leadership School of the Bronx to mentor fellow classmates in the program.
Karim Abouelnaga co-founded Practice Makes Perfect as a way to give back to the community that helped him.
"I was fortunate enough to have a series of nonprofits and mentors step into my life and change my life trajectory," he says.
Abouelnaga says that the "summer slide" is a problem that low-income homes are especially prone to.
